Adrienne Avery

Hi, I’m Adrienne Avery. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Registered Play Therapist. I specialize in working with children and their caregivers to make the every day more manageable. As a play therapist I often work with children as the clients, however, I see the whole family system as a significant part of the child’s social and emotional development. Because of this, I prefer to work with caregivers at the same time that I am working with their child. This allows the skills and concepts that are taught in the therapy room to be continued at home and on after therapy has concluded. This also allows space for caregivers to feel supported in their experiences as they do their best to support their children.

I have specific training in ways to engage children ages 2 and older in a therapeutic environment, as well as an understanding of typical development. Whether there is a history of trauma or a child is struggling socially and emotionally, I can help.

I start with an attachment-based lens in all of my work, and then utilize different modalities depending on the presenting problem. With children, I primarily utilize Experiential Play Therapy and Child Centered Play Therapy. I have completed the Theraplay Level 1 training and am a certified Circle of Security Parenting facilitator; I use elements of both of these when working with children and their caregivers.

I thoroughly enjoy learning and developing as a therapist and continually engage in professional research, reading, and training opportunities.
